What is a Code Retreat?

A code retreat is a day-long event where programmers gather to practice the fundamentals of programming outside of the constraints of work.

Pairs of programmers work to solve a problem in 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, the code is deleted. The programmers perform a retrospective, reflecting on their progress and how things went.

This process is repeated throughout the day, with each iteration having different partners and constraints.

Corey Haines gives a good introduction to a code retreat in this video:

Cleveland Code Retreat Introduction from Corey Haines on Vimeo.

The Global Day of Code Retreat is a worldwide event with code retreats in many major cities.

Why should I go?

There are many benefits to attending a code retreat:

  • Practicing the fundamentals improves your mastery
  • Programming outside the pressures of work gives you the freedom to experiment
  • Working with new programmers teaches you new ways of thinking, new workflows, new programming languages and tools.

What will I need to bring?

  1. A laptop that is ready to write code in your favorite language(s).
  2. A unit testing library, ready to use.
  3. Some sort of offline version control system (Git), if you are familiar with one.
  4. A stopwatch/timer app, if you have a smartphone.
  5. A pen & paper, if it helps you brainstorm.

The Louisville session will be located at Adecco Staffing, 101 Bullitt Ln, Louisville, KY 40222.

When is it?

Schedule & details for the Global Day of Code Retreat

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to send a quick reminder that the Global Day of Code Retreat is this Saturday morning. I want to get started as close to 9am as possible, so the doors will be open at 8:30am. Emily Schweiss from Addecco will be providing coffee and bagels!

We'll start off with a short introduction and description of the problem. Then we'll do a few iterations before lunch around noon. Becca Hill from Anchor Point Technical Resources will be providing a Qdoba naked burrito bar for lunch. After lunch we'll do more iterations, and have a closing discussion around 4pm. There will be a raffle at the end of the day.

There will be WiFi, but please make sure your laptop is set up with your favorite programming languages and testing libraries ahead of time.

For all you twitter users, the official hash tag is #gdcr12.

Feel free to ask me any questions. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

Eric Lathrop
