Event:

Hacktoberfest!! How to contribute to an Open Source project

Short title for calendar grid: KyOSS
Date: Wednesday, Oct 10, 2018
Time: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Location: TEK Systems, first-floor conference room, 700 N.Hurstbourne Pkwy. (Steel Technologies Bldg.)

You've probably been there: You'd love to work on an enhancement or bug fix for your favorite open source project, but, somehow that Github "pull request" process seemed a little offputting. Tonight Jeff Squyres will give us a soup-to-nuts tutorial / demonstration of how to submit a pull request on github.com. The goal here is to enable everyone to know how to make a pull request (so that they can submit 5 pull requests in October to qualify for a t-shirt!).

I sent the notice a few days ago: it's Hacktoberfest time!

I think we should have a soup-to-nuts tutorial / demonstration of how to submit a pull request on github.com. The goal here is to enable everyone to know how to make a pull request (so that they can submit 5 pull requests in October to qualify for a t-shirt!).

I'd be happy to give the tutorial / demonstration.

Can some people submit some suggestions here to the list for some simple PRs against open source projects on github.com that we can use as real examples? The smaller / simpler the diff that will be submitted, the better.

If you're looking for existing examples:

Here's a PR with a simple diff in a project I'm following (trying to learn how to build an automated test for a graphical application I'm building in Qt)

https://github.com/cisco-open-source/qtwebdriver/pull/57

Know anyone at Cisco? ;)

If you plan to create a new PR on the fly in the demo, I opened an issue in the project a few months ago (regarding building the project on Mac) that could make for a two-line PR:

https://github.com/cisco-open-source/qtwebdriver/issues/62

(I just never got around to opening one myself - I wound up building it on Linux since that's where my target device is. But I'd also probably want to try to auto detect which macOS SDK is on the system if possible, rather than assume 10.13 instead of 10.8--I've already updated to 10.14)

It's Hacktoberfest time!

Put simply: make a total of 5 pull requests on any public repos on github.com that contain commits from you, and get a free t-shirt!

This is a great excuse to get involved in open source software.

See below for more details.
