Short title for calendar grid: KyOSS
Date: Wednesday, Aug 14, 2019
Location: TEK Systems, first-floor conference room, 700 N.Hurstbourne Pkwy. (Steel Technologies Bldg.)

Four great topics ranging from high level to nitty-gritty:
  • Data Science: Some overlooked roles and applications
  • Container Orchestration and Kubernetes
  • xdotool: command line tool for desktop control
  • jq - sed-like tool but for JSON data

Overlooked Applications and Roles in Data Science
(Shane Kimble)

Are data scientists really the most important people in data science? They do amazing work, but other critical members of a data science team are often overlooked. I'll talk about why I think the product/project manager can be considered the most important team member. I'll also talk about the results of the data science process and how are they're applied in more unusual ways.

Container Orchestration and Kubernetes
(Deven Phillips)

Linux containers (and Docker) have taken the IT world by storm, but running a single container is a lot different than running hundreds or thousands. You need a different way of managing your containers at scale, which is where Kubernetes comes in. We'll talk a little about what Kubernetes is, what it does, and where it's going.

(Barton Chittenden)

[link:|xdotool] lets you simulate keyboard input and mouse activity, move and resize windows, etc. It does this using X11’s XTEST extension and other Xlib functions. Additionally, you can search for windows and move, resize, hide, and modify window properties like the title. If your window manager supports it, you can use xdotool to switch desktops, move windows between desktops, and change the number of desktops.

(Michael Speer)

[link:|jq] is like sed for JSON data. You can use it to slice and filter and map and transform structured data with the same ease that sed, awk, grep and friends let you play with text.
