Urgent Appeal for Action to preserve our fire protection, emergency rescue, and medical response in the downtown neighborhoods
A small delegation from the Old Louisville Neighborhood Council met with the Mayor this afternoon (Tuesday, Jan. 6) to attempt to persuade him to reconsider his decision to close the downtown firehouse at 6th and York. A number of questions were raised that the Mayor indicated he would have to consult with Chief Frederick to be able to answer. He said that he would get back to the delegation tomorrow with his answer as to any reconsideration of his earlier decision. After the meeting, some of those present indicated that they were not at all convinced that the Mayor would in fact reverse his decision to close the firehouse. That is why it is so important to raise a loud and vigorous campaign now to attempt through political means to protect our firehouse and the Engine 7 firefighters so they in turn might continue to protect us.

Perhaps you did not know the Mayor intends to close by 2012 two additional firehouses serving the downtown and downtown neighborhoods. If these closures occur as planned, our area will not only lose the three firehouses and their apparatus and equipment, but also 36 firefighters.

Please read the attached call to action and respond to this challenge in as strong and effective a way as you are able to mount. Now is the time for action. Now is the time to make that call, write that letter, post that email -- now is the time to organize and take meaningful steps to secure the outcome we desire.

Show up at Thursday's Metro Council meeting at 6 pm
Some of the old Louisville folk are planning on having a presence at the Metro Council meeting tonight (Thursday, Jan. 8) to show their concern over losing the firehouse.

The Mayor is off to Washington today and the Council hasn't considered this issue at all. With D-Day on Saturday, it's time we started pressuring them to pressure the mayor to do the right thing.
